Competition team at St Giles

[Ringers at St Giles, Rowley Regis]

On Saturday 1st March 2008 the ringers from St Laurence took part in the North Worcestershire Striking Competition organised by the WDCRA at Rowley Regis. This was our first entry in a local competition and the band were pleased to win the Call Change section. We brought home a certificate for the tower and the call change trophy which is a wooden bell. This will hang in the tower at St Laurence until we have to defend our title in 2009.

The team members on the day were:

  Treble Pippa Morley
  Second Pam Morley
  Third Mark Reacord
  Fourth Penny Bradsell
  Fifth Greg Hunt (Conductor)
  Tenor Colin Bennett

The 180 changes in the performance lasted about five and a half minutes. These had to including the popular named changes Queens, Reverse Queens, Tittums & Whittingtons. Each of these named changes had to be rung for at least 4 whole pulls (handstoke & backstoke) in accordance with the rules.

The sequence of the bells being rung - the "tune" as it were - is controlled by the conventions of Change Ringing and the rules of the competition. Our performance was judged on the regularity of our striking and the six team members had been practicing at St Laurence for some weeks beforehand. They had managed a preliminary visit to St Giles before the day of the competition but apart from that they were only allowed two minutes practice with the unfamiliar bells before starting their performance.
