Alvechurch Morris Mummers Play

[The dragon at the Alvechurch Morris Mummers Play]

We'd like to thank the Alvechurch Morris team for deciding to donate their collection from their Mummer's Play to the St Laurence Bell Fund this year. Their performance raised £250.23 for us. Taking this contribution together with the Festive Coffee Morning and the efforts of our carol singers in the pubs means that we've had a very successful Christmas of fund raising.

Alvechurch Morris have been presenting their traditional Mummer's Play every New Year at the Crown Inn in Withybed Green since 1989 and the dragon was the star of this year's play, breathing fire as he moves in on St George for the kill.

The Mummers's Play is "traditional" in the sense that the basic story of St George, the Dragon and the Turk is heavily embellished by references to local and national events. This year we had a "Prince Harry", a dead hen harrier and a man with clipboard labelled "HMRC" asking the audience for their names and addresses and for their help searching for a lost CD.
